Physical and Chemical Properties
TPX is a polymer of 4-methylpentene-1 produced by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., Japan. TPX is its trade name, with the chemical name Methyl pentene copolymer, abbreviated as PMP. Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. is the world's sole manufacturer of TPX;
PMP—Poly(4-methyl-1-pentene). The English name is Poly(4-Methyl-1-Pentene), abbreviated as PMP. This material was first developed by Mitsui Chemicals, Japan, and named TPX, hence PMP materials are commonly referred to as TPX in the market.
PMP has excellent heat resistance, outstanding electrical insulation, and chemical resistance. Its ultraviolet light transmittance is superior to glass and other transparent resins. With a low refractive index, TPX's refractive index is only 1.463nD20, second only to fluororesins, making it suitable as a low refractive index material. It has high gas permeability due to its molecular structure, offering better breathability compared to other resins. It exhibits excellent chemical resistance, particularly to acids, alkalis, and alcohols. PMP is a polyolefin with extremely low water absorption, ensuring no dimensional changes due to moisture absorption. It does not hydrolyze even in boiling water, making it suitable for medical laboratory equipment and animal breeding cages requiring steam sterilization.
PMP is odorless, non-toxic, and appears as colorless transparent granular solid with a density of only 0.833, making it the lightest thermoplastic resin available. It has a melting point of 240°C and a visible light transmittance of up to 90%.
PMP has a stable C-C molecular structure, demonstrating superior chemical resistance compared to polycarbonate and acrylic resins.
PMP has a very low surface tension, so special treatment is required for processes such as bonding and printing. Additionally, due to its low mechanical strength, it is not suitable for machining. PMP can be colored by dry blending, and when selecting colorants, it is recommended to choose pigments with heat resistance exceeding the molding temperature.
